Broadstone have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Trainee Actuary to join the team.

Location: York

Salary:  £29k per annum

Start date: Autumn 2024

Who are we?

Broadstone is a thriving consultancy offering a wide range of services in pensions, investments, and employee benefits. Established in 1989, the business has grown from a small team to a workforce of over 600, brought together by a desire to deliver a personal, expert service to all who put their faith in us.  We take pride in assisting small and medium sized pension schemes who lack the time or resources to address increasingly challenging issues themselves.

Our values are at the heart of everything we do and drive us forward every day. We strive to attract, develop, and retain top talent to work together to provide the best possible client outcomes. Our team feel empowered to share ideas to continuously improve our business. The impressive results of both client and staff surveys are a source of great pride. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Why work for us?

Through our generous study package, we will support you in your pursuit of a professional qualification with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). You will work within a friendly, supportive environment and quickly become an integral and valuable part of our actuarial team. Your training will follow a structured programme and focus on commercial as well as technical skills in addition to your professional study. The work is varied and this variety affords you insight into the different roles available to you as your career progresses. Whatever your preference, you will be encouraged and empowered to achieve your ambitions.

Trainee Actuary - The Role:

An Actuary is a skilled professional who uses maths to solve complex problems so if you enjoy working with large sets of data, complicated calculations and working as part of a team, we can offer you a very rewarding career.

Pension schemes form the backbone of the UK savings industry – relied on by millions to provide an income in retirement. Striking the right balance between the costs and risks of a pension scheme, alongside implementing best practice governance requirements, is complex but rewarding.  Our team is always looking at fresh ways of thinking, developing solutions to overcome the challenges faced.

The successful candidate will work directly with experienced actuaries and consultants helping to advise our trustee and corporate clients in all areas of pension consulting. You will have the opportunity to attend client meetings in your first year and as you progress you will eventually take responsibility for your own schemes.

Trainee Actuary – Key Responsibilities:

The role will include:

- Financial modelling and risk analysis

- Applying actuarial skills and concepts to calculate the value of pensions and other benefits

- Developing an understanding of Defined Benefit pensions legislation and other obligations relevant to our clients

- Providing support to Scheme Actuaries in all aspects of their role advising trustees

- Liaising and working with other teams both in and outside of Broadstone to help optimise and enhance services provided by us to our clients

- Study for your professional exams to become a qualified actuary

- Providing support to other senior colleagues on more general consulting matters, as a client manager

- Joining client meetings alongside senior colleagues to expand your relationship building and consulting skills

Trainee Actuary – You:

- On track to graduate with a 2.1 or above at bachelor’s degree level (numerate degree preferable)

- An A level (or equivalent) at Grade B or above in Maths

- Enjoy explaining complex information to others

- Ready to start studying towards your professional qualifications

- The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK

- We encourage applications from all backgrounds, including those who have had a career break or are looking for a change

Trainee Actuary – Benefits:

- Competitive salary, with exam linked salary increases.

- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (with option of buying more)

- Fully supported study, including membership of the IFoA, study materials, tutorials, exam fees, and exam leave

- Generous pension scheme

- Health cash plan

- Additional optional benefits to best suit your lifestyle

- Social events

- Volunteering opportunities
